“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” – Oscar Wilde
There are too many businesses out there that don’t take dress code seriously these days. These companies encourage their employees to dress freely or casually for comfort. Call me old fashioned, but I believe that first impressions matter. And what kind of first impression are you making in your baggy track-pants and sneakers? A typical CEO wouldn’t trust a person dressed like that with their petty cash, never mind their business!
In the sales industry, not only are you selling premium products or services, but you’re also selling yourself- so it’s imperative to always look your best! You never know when you will be required to meet with a big client, or with someone from outside your company. What you’ve got to remember is that you are representative of your organisation, and your image to the outside world will be the image that people remember when they think of your company.
Your appearance and business attire needs to be professional at all times. I’d go so far in saying that the image that you portray to others could indirectly mean the difference between securing a new deal, contract or sale and losing the opportunity.Make sure that you’re always the best dressed person in the room. Dressing to impress shows that you mean business, and will ensure that you are taken seriously.
Ever heard of the saying ‘don’t dress for the job you have; dress for the job you want’ ? If you want to be the CEO of a multi-millionaire dollar empire one day, then why not dress like one now? Always think bigger, and aim higher. My advice to anyone is to invest in some great quality suits. Even if you’re not making the big bucks yet, you need to look like you are! When you meet a prospect for the first time your shoes and your belt should match, your shoes should be polished, your trousers and jacket should be pressed and you should exude the type of confidence that commands attention. Looking like a million dollars will always work in your favour.
Another thing that I can’t stress about enough is personal hygiene. Looking your best also means smelling your best! Always make sure that you’re showered and well groomed before you step into your suit. A good cologne always makes a good impresion, as does a great haircut that’s styled well. Take special care when getting ready in the morning and pay close attention to detail. For example, if you own a cat- make sure that you don’t pitch up to a meeting wearing it’s fur coat. Likewise, if you’re going to the effort of wearing a nice suit then ensure that it’s properly pressed! A little effort will go a long way.
