HOW TO TO TAKE YOUR CAREER TO THE NEXT LEVEL:

How badly do you want to achieve the life you’ve always wanted, experience phenomenal success and take your career to the next level? As we head towards the end of another year, it’s even more essential to take stock of where you are, where you’re going and where you ultimately want to be.

Here are my top tips to follow if you’re serious about taking your career to the next level:

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT:

It may seem pretty straightforward, but to take your career to the next level and truly get what you want, you have to know what you want! How can you expect to get to your destination without knowing where you’re going and how you’re going to get there?

Do you love your job? If you do, then perhaps the way that you can take your career to the next level is by getting a promotion. But if you don’t love your job, then do you want to be stuck in that same dead-end job at the end of next year? If not, then you need to take action.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Know what you want
  • Know why you want it
  • Know when you want it by
  • Know how you’re going to get there

If, for example, you’re currently a salesperson who wants to be promoted to a sales manager role, then you’ll need to know all of the requirements of a sales manager. There are things that your employer will require you to fulfil before they can promote you. Speak to your boss openly and ask them to list everything that you’ll need to do. They might suggest that you take a leadership course, or perhaps they’ll require you to take on more responsibilities at the office. The only way to know for sure how to get to the next level is to have this conversation with them and then get confirmation that once you’ve achieved everything that they require of you, you’ll be selected for that new role.

MAKE IT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO LEARN:

If you want to better yourself and increase your chances of substantial career growth, then you need to make it your responsibility to learn. Don’t sit around waiting for your boss to send you on a course or to a seminar. If you want to be seen as an expert in your field, then read books, do online courses, listen to podcasts, network with individuals who are smarter than yourself and soak up as much knowledge as you can. Continual learning is so important!

MAP OUT THE STEPS THAT YOU NEED TO TAKE:

As I mentioned above, you must know what you want, why you want it, when you want it and how you’re going to get there. Visualisation is vital here, so you’ll need to map out the steps that you need to take. If you’re someone that tends to get overwhelmed easily then after you’ve written down all the big things that you want to achieve (such as doubling your income), then write down the daily steps that you’ll need to take in order to achieve that ultimate goal (perhaps you need to get ten referrals per day and meet with five prospects?).

DON’T LET FAILURE DETER YOU:

Let this sink in- failure does not define you. We all fail at some point during our lives. Failure is inevitable. But how you handle that failure is essentially responsible for either your success or your stagnation. Things don’t always go according to plan, but you need to remain committed to learning and being the best possible version of yourself. When you fall down, stand up again. And when you fail, figure out why you failed so that you don’t make those same mistakes again.
