COULD ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BE THE KEY WHEN IT COMES TO TO HIRING THE RIGHT CANDIDATES?
Your company is only as good as your worst employee. Let that sink in for a minute. All it takes is one rotten apple to spoil the bunch. And if you happen to hire someone that’s not right for the job- your company could potentially suffer the consequences.
Hiring the wrong people can be a very expensive mistake. And inefficiencies in the existing recruiting model mean that the right talent and the right job don’t always end up together.
I recently sat down with Harvey Bennett, the Co-Founder of Searchie where we discussed how you can now use AI (Artificial Intelligence) as a tool to hire the right person for any job.
Searchie’s vision is to create a solution where job seekers get jobs faster, and hiring teams get the most qualified candidates by eliminating frictional unemployment.
Using AI gives employers the ability to understand potential employees, how they think, how they would integrate into an existing team and how they would potentially behave in different situations. Companies such as Searchie are able to provide all of this data prior to any face-to-face interviews, thus saving you time and essentially lots of money.
Here are 3 things to bear in mind when it comes to recruiting staff in this day and age:
- CV’S DON’T TELL YOU ANYTHING:
CV’s may be the industry standard but you should never hire someone based on what’s written on their resume. People are more complicated than a simple word document. Psychometric tests and reports are fundamental when it comes to screening candidates. And using a combination of these tests, artificial intelligence and video will be far more informative than your average CV.
- COMPUTERS ARE BETTER AT RECRUITING THAN HUMANS:
Let’s face it- human beings are full of bias. But by using a machine to create a personality or psychometric report, any potential bias will be removed. While computers can be taught to understand the complexities of human emotions, they themselves aren’t ruled by emotional triggers like humans are. For example, you could be having a bad day when you interview a potential candidate, and because of your emotional state, you could misinterpret things that a machine wouldn’t. Likewise, you could hit it off with a potential employee because of something that you might have in common, and this might make you more inclined to hire this person. But a machine will focus on whether or not they’re the right candidate for the job based on actual data and if they have all of the relevant skills to succeed in the role.
- BUSINESS OWNERS NEED TO BE CLEAR ON WHAT THEY WANT AND NEED PRIOR TO HIRING STAFF:
There’s a period of introspection that all employers need to go through prior to hiring anyone. It’s not just about hiring the right people- it should also be about creating an environment where your employees can flourish.
What are your cultural values? What is your ethos when it comes to managing people? How do you want your managers to behave? Think about the problems that you’ll need to solve within your business and the types of people that will be needed to do this. In a team, everyone has a different role to play and there are different personalities that will be suited to each different role. Once you’re clear on all of the above, you’ll have a better chance of hiring a person who fits your company.
A lot of companies out there want a quick fix and want to hire as many people as possible, as fast as possible. But until you define the above, you’ll continue to hire the wrong people.
