“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”

Working a job that you hate is soul destroying. Whether you dislike your boss and your colleagues, or loathe your tasks at hand, if you don’t enjoy what you do you’re going to end up living a mediocre and unfulfilling life.

I would never encourage my daughters to work a job that they don’t like. I would never want them to simply earn some money to get by. People who work just in order to put food on the table ultimately end up in a position where they have no passion and no pride. Every parent wants their child to grow up, take education seriously, and pursue a career that they’re passionate about. We want our kids to love what they do. So then why do so many of us not take this advice ourselves? Why do we get up day after day to go and do jobs that we don’t really love?

A lot of people have the mentality that jobs don’t have to be fulfilling. They see their career as a means to an end and something that will allow them to pay the bills. They don’t live to work; they work to live. But do you really want to spend the rest of your life hating what you do? Especially if you’re going to be doing it for at least eight hours a day, five or six days a week.

Would you be happy to spend the rest of your life doing what you’re doing right now? If not then what are you doing to change your current situation? What kind of decisions have you made to change it? Of course you need money in order to pay your bills, but I’ve got news for you- it is in fact possible to make money and love what you do for a living. It’s important to feel inspired every day. You should be motivated every day, and you should be excited about your day ahead. If you dread the thought of going to work, then you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing!

It’s important not to settle for an unfulfilling career. If you take into account the average number of years that a person works before they retire, it would mean settling for 47 years! Why would you waste the majority of your life on a job that doesn’t make you happy? A lot of people are stuck in a rut or a routine that they don’t know how to get out of. These people fear what would happen if they took any risks to better their situation.

If you fear leaving your job that is bringing in a steady income, then try to do some other type of work or training in the evenings or weekends when you’re not working your 9 to 5. By doing this you can re-train yourself, re-educate yourself, and ultimately take the necessary steps in order to achieve your goal and move into a career that you can be proud of.

The secret to success is simple- love what you do. Don’t just think about what you’d love to do- take action! If you don’t take action you’ll be stuck in a dead-end job. Take action now so that you don’t land up living a miserable, mediocre, average life. When you take action, you’ll land up in the place that you want to be. You’ll experience the opportunity to grow, you’ll feel inspired, and pretty soon work won’t feel like work at all!

Take the advice that you would give to your kids. Get out of the rut that you’re currently in, and do something that you’re passionate about.
